Stonier & Co. was founded by John Stonier in 1861. They were a china and glass merchant company, known for supplying the great liners of the early 20th century, including the RMS Titanic and the RMS Queen Mary. In 1933 they were sold to George Jones & Sons. In 1997, they were acquired by Liverpool jewelers, David M. Robinson, and continued distributing china in Liverpool.
The Cunard Steamship Company Limited was founded by Samuel Cunard in 1839, as the "British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company", initially launched to ship the Royal Mail from Great Britain to Canada and the United States. Later, he commissioned the construction of five transatlantic steamers, the Britannia was first. They launched the RMS Britannia on February 5, 1840. They changed their name to "The Cunard Steamship Company" in 1878. A fun historical detail, in 1842 Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine were passengers aboard the Britannia.
